Email Spammers are a real pain of today Internet. How to prevent yourself from email spam. Many times recipients are not cautious enough what results in tons of unwanted messages in their email boxes. Ofcourse there are some general rules you should not break in order not to pass your email address into email spammers' hands.
- Do not disclose your email within websites, at least do not make an active link from it, ie. mailto:blah blah. Robots will harvest your address.
- Do not disclose your email within forums, tick an option to hide your email address.
- Do not use your corporate email to communicate with your friends
- Do not get involved in chain letter schemes, i.e. do not forward stupid messages to all your friends, neither to any of them. It also refers to emails that say if you send this message to many friend then Bill Gates gets ripped off or some kid in some strange country gets food. Get real, forwarding emails will not help any kid. You want to help then find Unicef website and help.
All these above activities cause spam.
Email spam explained
Why not to forward messages? I got so funny picture from my friend and I want to share it with all my mates in the world, why should not I do it? What is wrong with it?
Most of the times this funny picture is originally created and sent by the email spammer. The scheme works as follows:
- spammer creates the email with funny picture
- then sends it to all his friends, yes, email spammers have friends too
- each friend of spammer forwards this email to all his/her friends
- each friend of spammer's friend does the same
- one day the email spammer gets this email back from a friend of your friends who is the friend of spammer and this is a genuine clondike for him/her.
Most of forwarders did not hide recipients' identities. Ooops! This way the spammer gets hundreds of active and genuine email addresses. These email addresses are from everywhere, from big companies, small companies, private people, etc. And now I am to tell what this data base is worth in email spammer's real life. Sending an advertising message to 1000 genuine recipients costs about $100. Remember, our email spammer got real email addresses this way. And after while you start to receive emails with strange offers. Do not ask where these people got your private email address from anymore, because you gave it to them yourself.
